Countless stories have been told of the legendary Helen of Troy, with a more recent and famous quote in Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus “Was this the face that launched a thousand ships?”. But far from Greek mythology in the quiet town of Bamenda in the North West of Cameroon, another Helen was creating a legend of her own. Rumour has it that Helen Azah Fuondjing carried a little boy on her back on his first day to Kindergarten to curious questions “Is that your youngest son?”. While her beauty and grace were the stuff of legends, it is her strength, stamina and passion for learning which were most celebrated in her community. Widowed in her early thirties, Helen’s sense of industry helped her raise eight successful kids through the best schools at home and abroad—three of whom continue to revolutionise education in Cameroon. A mother, counselor and refuge to many others, it is perhaps her upbringing in a small chiefdom that gave her the courage to impact lives as she did. It is in her memory that we created this Foundation to carry on her legacy well beyond her immediate boundaries. Helen was my grandmother and that little boy was me and I know she will be proud of our work. Join us!

WARM SCHOOL MEALS
HAFEF volunteers spent the morning of May 26th at the Government Bilingual Primary School Bonendale, Douala, meeting parents of children preselected to participate in our pilot scheme for warm school meals. This is in line with HAFEF’s programme no. 2 which caters to the nutritional needs of underprivileged children in our communities, who would otherwise not fully meet their academic potential. We would like to thank the Headteacher and his staff and our kind sponsors for accommodating our efforts and we look forward to contributing to the welfare of the children.
